The weapon for the treatment of EMS and AHPNS

The “Early Mortality Syndrome” (EMS) were commonly found in the culture of Penaeus vannamei. The essential of EMS is acute hepatopancreatic necrosis (AHPNS), which is currently one of the most serious diseases in shrimp farming worldwide. The acute hepatopancreatic necrosis generally has the highest incidence rate in 20 to 30 days of seedling release, which can lead to a discharge rate at more than 80%.

The disease often occurs suddenly, there is no obvious sign in the early stage. Once shrimp suffers from the disease, it develops rapidly after the onset, and a very high mortality rate will occur within a few days, resulting in extremely heavy economic losses.

At present, domestic and foreign research experts have studied from seedlings, pathogens, water quality, feed, and aquaculture management to prevent and control AHPNS. The specific causes of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis in shrimps are divided into the following four situations:

1. Shrimp seedlings carry a large number of pathogens, resulting in the death of shrimps placed in ponds;

2. The toxic algae or a large number of algae died in the pond during the early culture period, resulting in a large number of shrimp deaths;

3. In the middle and late breeding period (sometimes also occurs in the early period), the toxic and harmful physical and chemical factors in the pond water exceed the standard, leading to poisoning on shrimp, subsequently shrimps suffer from by pathogenic diseases.

4. In the middle and late breeding period, a large number of toxic and harmful algae or algae died in the pond, subsequently shrimps suffer from by pathogenic diseases.

In fact, the above four conditions leading to acute hepatopancreatic necrosis in P. vannamei are the result of stress and pathogenic effects in the culture environment (including algae). The disease has a rapid development and high mortality. Once the disease is onset , it is difficult to control and treat, So it shall mostly adopt prevention.

Prevention and control measures of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis in Vannamei

The prevention and control measures for AHPNS on shrimps are mainly to reduce the introduction of microorganisms: buy shrimps that do not carry pathogenic bacteria, disinfect firstly before the water entering the shrimp pond, often clean the bottom of pond, diligently watch the water, reduce the proliferation in water with vibrating bacteria., cultivate beneficial algae and reduce harmful algae. At the same time, the liver and pancreas shall be well maintained, with bile acids added to the feed to protect the shrimp hepatopancreas.

Bile acids can combine or decompose endotoxin in the intestine, prevent endotoxin from entering the liver through the portal vein through the intestinal mucosa, reduce the absorption of endotoxin in the intestine, enhance the function of barrier of the intestine, and prevent the harm of endotoxin from affecting the intestine, hepatopancreas and even the whole body of shrimp.

Bile acids can also enhance the liver function, promote the ability of detoxification, reduce the damage of poisonous substances on the liver, improve the anti-stress ability and increase the survival rate of shrimp by more than 10%.

Nowadays, there are various drugs for the shrimp and liver-protecting on the market, mainly including Chinese medicines for anti-heat and detoxification, multi-vitamins for strengthening nutrition, bile acids for liver- protecting and detoxification, and peptides and bacterial preparations. Base on comprehensive comparison, only bile acid can fundamentally protect the liver and pancreas of shrimp, promote liver and pancreas detoxification and detoxification, prevent hepatopancreatic lesions and necrosis, and improve the survival rate of shrimp.
